Welfare economics:
That field of economics that addresses the optimal use of resources, where preferences and the income distribution might be taken as given. Sometimes highly stylized models are used to derive conditions for optimality. For policy analysis, approximations are made so conclusions are based on rough estimates of alternative scenarios.
