Vertical integration:
Ownership of all aspects of production, sale, and delivery for a product or service (often as a result of mergers of firms involved in different stages of production). Electric utilities have been vertically integrated historically, with a single firm owning assets and being responsible for generation, transmission, and distribution systems, as well as for the metering and billing activities (retail).
