Avoided cost:
When a unit of output is not produced, total cost falls. Avoided cost is the incremental cost that is not incurred when the additional output is not produced. For example, the term can refer to the cost avoided by an electric utility when another service option exists; e.g., an independent generator. Such costs can be the basis for the rates independent suppliers receive from utilities.
